About us

History

Ecolibrium was founded in 1995, at a time when environmental law was still relatively thin on the ground, the environmental regulators were Local Authorities and River Purification Boards, and wider public concerns about the environment were only just starting to stir. Perhaps not the ideal climate to start offering environmental solutions to businesses! Or, perhaps, just ahead of the game with insight into now well-recognised problems and a vision of the future!

Indeed, the most forward thinking companies were already starting to realise that their future prosperity depended on their environmental performance. Ecolibrium's pioneering beginnings were consolidated and rewarded with pollution risk reduction projects for multinational oil and power companies; one involving the development of a spill contingency plan for an Aberdeen to Grangemouth oil pipeline.

In 1996, Ecolibrium made its breakthrough into the manufacturing sector, this time on the back of its water management skills. The healthcare product multinational not only achieved full legal compliance, the project remit, but was delivered significant ongoing cost savings from a systematic Resource Efficiency approach. Today, in response to Climate Change, this best practice approach continues to be promoted by leading organisations as the only realistic solution.

1998 saw Ecolibrium's first multinational site receive certification to ISO 14001, as the most progressive companies took advantage of the means to demonstrate improving environmental performance; realised as key to their future success. Ecolibrium's progress resulted in the move to our existing central Edinburgh Office in 2000, with the opening of our North Scotland base in 2001 to service our increasing whisky distilling and oil sector clients locally.

Derek Panton BSc(Hons) MSc MCIWEM CEnv MIEMA CSci, one of the company founders, continues to take overall responsibility for all aspects of Ecolibrium projects and output. Having provided solutions for over 250 organisations and acted for a number of government initiatives, Derek remains a leader in the field. Clients should expect achievement of optimum associated business benefits available, in addition to core project objectives, through his leadership.
